Los Angeles School Police Department

The Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD) was established in August of 1948 to create a safe and tranquil environment for the students, teachers and staff of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The LASPD is the largest school police department in the United States with five police divisions throughout Los Angeles, deploying 350 police officers and 175 school safety officers.
Twenty four hours a day, the LASPD is responsible for providing police services to:
- A jurisdiction covering 708 square miles
- Approximately 905,020 students
- Approximately 80,325 teachers, administrators and additional school staff
- Approximately 1,030 schools, centers, and administrative offices
The LASPD deploys 350 sworn personnel in a variety of ranks:
- Chief of Police
- Deputy Chief
- Lieutenant
- Sergeant
- Detective
- Senior Police Officer
- Police Officer

- Field Training Officer
- Criminal Investigation

- Special Investigation

- Police Activities League (P.A.L.) / Police Explorers
- Special Response Team (S.R.T.)
- School Safety Officer (non-sworn security position)
- Police Dispatcher (civilian position)
- Specialist Reserve Officer (civilian position)
- Records, payroll, subpoena and other clerical support staff (civilian position)
All police officers must complete an intensive probationary period after graduation from the police academy. Prior to selection to any specialized unit, there may also be an additional five year field assignment prerequisite.
