Little Rock Air Force Base

Little Rock Air Force Base is an United States Air Force facility located in Jacksonville, Arkansas. The building process used over 6,000 military personnel and another 2,000 civilians. The base opened for operation on August 1, 1955. The base currently is the headquarters for the 314th Airlift Wing, 314th Maintenance Group, 314th Medical Group, 314th Mission Support Group and the 314th Operations Group.
History
Construction of Little Rock Air Force Base begin on 6 November, 1953 the base was officially activated by Strategic Air Command (SAC) on 1 August, 1955.
In 1960, the Air Force announced that the Little Rock Air Force Base would become a central support base for 18 Titan II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Sites.
In 1962, it deployed 11 B-47 to municipal airports around the nation for support in the Cuban Missile Crisis.
In February 1963, the first of the Titan II missiles was installed at the site chosen in Searcy, Arkansas. Several tests were conducted in 1965 to determine the reliability of the missile sites. These tests launched missiles down the Pacific Rim.
In 1965 the base also participated in various relief efforts. It responded in April to a tornado that ripped through Conway, Arkansas. In September they responded in Louisiana to Hurricane Betsy.
In the 1970's the base went through serious changes. The first of the C-130 began arriving in March that year. On 31 March, 1970, the Little Rock Air Force base officially ended its status as a SAC commissioned base and began its commission as a Tactical Air Command base. The base also took up what is now its current status as a home for a squadron of C-130's who are used primarily for training drills and relief missions
