Lieutenant colonel
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
In the British Army, Royal Marines, United States Air Force, United States Army and United States Marine Corps, a lieutenant colonel is a commissioned officer superior to a major and subordinate to a colonel. In the Royal Navy and the United States Navy, the rank of commander is comparable to the rank of lieutenant colonel, as is the rank of Wing Commander in the Royal Air Force.
In the British Army and Royal Marines, a lieutenant colonel wears a crown above a pip. The crown has varied in the past with different monarchs; the current one being the Crown of St Edward. The insignia for all four United States positions is a silver oak leaf.
