La Academia
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
La Academia (The Academy) is a Mexican television show which is like a cross between Big Brother and American Idol, itself based on the British Pop Idol, in which members of the public compete to win a recording contract.
Each year, 14-18 young people live together in a house sequestered from the rest of the world, spending their days taking classes in singing, dancing, acting, and related fields, each preparing one or two songs for a 3-hour concert which they give each Sunday evening for television viewers and a live studio audience. Each week, one of the students is eliminated until reaching the grand finale, in which five of the remaining students compete for the top prize. Students are eliminated based on whoever receives the fewest votes during the week (the votes are stopped at the end of the concert). Viewers can vote by telephone, but unlike American Idol, calls are not free. Each vote costs 25 Mexican pesos.
A related show, Camino a la fama airs during weekday afternoons and shows what the students have done that day in the house, not only academically, but also recreatively and interpersonally.
Currently, La Academia is going through its fourth generation. La Academia is a show from TV Azteca, one of Mexico's biggest TV stations. La Academia is a very popular reality show in Mexico.
The show has been franchised to other countries, Malaysia (Akademi Fantasia), Indonesia (Akademi Fantasi Indosiar) and Thailand (Academy Fantasia).
