Léon Cogniet

Léon Cogniet (17941880, both Paris) was a French painter. In 1812, Cogniet entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Pierre-Narcisse Guérin at the same time as Delacroix and Géricault. He was a resident at the Villa Medici from 1817 to 1822.

A romantic painter, his main subjects were history and portraits, and in 1817 he won the Prix de Rome. Among his numerous students were Jean-Paul Laurens, Léon Bonnat et Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier.
