King of Burundi

Burundi was ruled by a monarch until 1966. The Tutsi monarchy ruled the nation for centuries, but became largely ceremonial with the colonization of the nation by Germany in 1899. Burundi ceased to be a monarchy when king Ntare V Ndizeye was deposed by prime minister Capt. Michel Micombero, who abolished the monarchy and declared a republic. The exact dates of the early monarchs is uncertain.

- Mwambutsa III Syarushambo Butama: 1767–1796
- Ntare IV Rugamba: 1796–1852
- Mwezi IV Gisabo: 1852–August 21 1908
- Mutaga IV Mbikije: 1908– November 30 1915
- Mwambutsa IV Bangiriceng: December 16 1915–July 8 1966
- Ntare V Ndizeye: September 1–November 28 1966
