History

It started life as a business news channel, beginning in the late 1960s. In the 1980s, its signal was used for the SelecTV subscription television service, which aired on evenings and weekends. In 1990, when SelecTV went out of business, KWHY focused its evening and weekend programming to Spanish-language content, including carrying programming from the Galavision network (now currently owned by Telemundo arch-rival, Univision).

In the late 1990s, KWHY shifted its business programming to another local area UHF station, and began broadcasting in Spanish full-time (sans Galavision). In 2001, Telemundo (which already owns its West Coast flagship, KVEA Channel 52) purchased KWHY, and has remained a Spanish independent station.
