The genus Islaya contains a dozen of cactus species and several varieties. It is named after R. Islay, who discovered this genus.

Description
Members of this genus have globular, sometimes cylindrical trunks (except I. krainziana). There are from 8 to 24 ribs.
Flowers appear near the apex center and reach 1.5 to 4 cm in diameter. All species have yellow flowers (with different nuances) except I. copiapoides which bears red ones. Fruits are oblong, reddish and covered with hair.

Culture
These cacti live in southern Peru and northern Chili, where they are found until an altitude of 1000 m. They grow fairly slowly and are difficult to cultivate.
