Island Gardens DLR station is a Docklands Light Railway station on the Isle of Dogs, just north of the River Thames. It is located between Cutty Sark and Mudchute stations and is in Travelcard Zone 2.

The station is situated close to the southern tip of the Isle of Dogs and close to the River Thames. The adjacent Island Gardens are a public park with a notable view across the river to the classical buildings of the the former Greenwich Hospital and the National Maritime Museum, with Greenwich Park forming a backdrop. The northern entrance of the Greenwich foot tunnel is also within the park.

Development

The original Island Gardens DLR station was opened in 1987 as the southern terminus of the DLR's initial system, and was an elevated terminal station with two platforms each capable of accommodating a single car train. With the introduction of two car trains the station required significant rebuild to allow one of these platforms to take two car trains.

The subsequent extension to Lewisham passes under the River Thames in a deep tube tunnel. This required a new Island Gardens station to be built slightly further away from the river, and underground. The original elevated station has since been demolished.
