Hutsuls

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

(Redirected from Hucul)

Hutsuls or Huculs (Ukrainian: Гуцули, singular Гуцул) are a group of Ukrainian highlanders, considered a subgroup of Rusyns by some references. Alternative spellings are Hutzuls, Gutsuls, Gutzuls, Guculs.

Huculs live in the Carpathian mountains to the east of the Lemkos and border with the territory of the Romanians. As a result, their traditional culture bears traces of Balkan influence. Their traditional occupations were cattle and sheep breeding, forestry and logging.

Huculs are also widely known of their handicraft: wood carving, brassworks, rug weaving, pottery, egg decorating (see pysanka).

Sergei Parajanov's film The Shadows of forgotten ancestors (Тіні забутих предків) portrays traditional Hucul life.
