Huambo

Huambo is the capital city of Huambo Province in Angola. Established by Portuguese in 1912. Thriving city in the colonial period, named Nova Lisboa (New Lisbon) between 1928 and 1975. Modern Huambo is a transportation center on the Benguela Railway, and food processing and the repair of railroad equipment are its most important industries. It had a population of 203,800 in 1983, newer estimates vary from 400k people (1995 estimate [Encarta]) to 1,859,500 people. (2004 estimate [world-gazetteer.com]).
