Hart Memorial Trophy

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

(Redirected from Hart Trophy)

The Hart Memorial Trophy is presented annually to the most valuable ice hockey player in the National Hockey League during the regular season. Voting is conducted by the members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association.

Presentation of the trophy originated in 1923 when the original trophy was donated by Dr. David Hart to the National Hockey League. Dr. Hart was the father of Cecil Hart, a former coach and manager of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team. After the plaques on the original trophy were filled by 1960 and its general condition had deteriorated, the league donated the Hart Memorial Trophy in its place and retired the original Hart Trophy to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Wayne Gretzky won the award a record 9 times in the 1980's.
