Gion Matsuri

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

Gion Matsuri (祇園祭) is an annual festival that takes place in Kyoto, Japan. It is one of the largest, and probably the most famous festival in Japan. It spans an entire month, culminating with a massive parade on July 17, in which each of Kyoto's 29 districts supplies an elaborately decorated float.

The festival originated in the year 869, when the portable shrines (omikoshi) of Yasaka Shrine were carried through the city in an attempt to spiritually purify it and rid it of plague.
