Geology of Mercury
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
Of all the planets, the geology of Mercury is the least known. It is comparatively close to the Sun, so studies are complicated by solar radiation and high surface temperatures. In addition, the day to night cycle on Mercury takes 58 terrestrial days. This means that it takes a long time to observe the entire planet in sunlight.
The Mariner 10 visited the planet three times during 1974 and 1975, but was only able to observe the side illuminated by the Sun.
