Functional constituency

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

(Redirected from Functional constituencies)

A functional constituency, in Hong Kong politics, refers to professional and special interest groups involved in the electoral process.

In Hong Kong, since 1998 only 24 of the 60 legislative council seats are directly elected by the people (geographical constituencies), with 30 elected by functional constituencies and 6 by an 800-member election committee. Beginning with the 2004 Hong Kong LegCo election, the number of directly elected seats was increased to 30 while the election committee was abolished.
