Enterochromaffin
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
Enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells occur in the wall of the gut, hence entero-, and look like chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla. ECL cells respond to acetylcholine, released by the vagus nerve, and release histamine. The histamine acts on H2 receptors in the parietal cell lining the gut cavity and triggers the secretion of acid.
