Earl Robertson
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
Earl Cooper Robertson "Robbie" (born November 24, 1910 in Bengough, Saskatchewan – January 19 1979) was a professional ice hockey goaltender who played 190 games in the National Hockey League. He played with the Detroit Red Wings and New York Americans.
Earl was playing in the minors when Detroit's regular goaltender Normie Smith injured his elbow in the 1937 playoffs and Earl did very well in leading the Red Wings to a second consecutive Stanley Cup.
Earl soon saw that such heroics do not get a regular job in the NHL, but he was destined to play in the league. Roy Worters had retired from the New York Americans and the Amerks bought him from Detroit. Earl responded with a fine first season and led the Americans to second place in the Canadian Division, and then played his part to upset the favoured New York Rangers and even came close to taking the Amerks to the finals before losing to Chicago.
He played on a weak team the following year, but managed to make the second all-star team.
The Americans deteriorated and after the 1941-42 season, he was farmed out, never to return to the NHL.
