Dilys Powell

Elizabeth Dilys Powell (1901 - June 3 1995) was a film critic and scholar of Ancient Greek.

She was the film critic in Punch magazine for many years, but was mainly known as the film critic of The Times and The Sunday Times, a role she fulfilled from 1939 until her retirement in 1976. Her collected reviews were published in 1989.

Powell's first husband was archaeologist Humfry Payne. Her books included: Descent from Parnassus (1934), An Affair of the Heart(1957), and The Villa Ariadne (1973).

She was a contestant on the BBC radio panel game My Word!.
