Dewey Redman

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

Dewey Redman (born May 17, 1931 in Fort Worth, Texas) is a free jazz saxophonist. Redman plays mainly tenor saxophone, though he occasionally doubles on Chinese musette and on rare occasions plays the clarinet. He is best known for his collaborations with Ornette Coleman (1968-1972) and Keith Jarrett (1971-1976), as well as his membership in the collective Old and New Dreams. Though generally associated with free jazz, Redman's tenor playing is quite melodic and has strong ties to the post-bop mainstream.

He is the father of tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman.
