Defense Threat Reduction Agency
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is an office of the United States Department of Defense whose primary function is to analyze potential threats to the United States of America, both homeland and abroad, and provide contingency plans for all such scenarios.
During the Cold War, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency was the primary office which developed OPLAN 1000, which were the plans to successfully combat the outbreak of World War III, if and when a conflict with the Soviet Union should erupt. Rumors also exist that the Defense Threat Reduction Agency maintains invasion plans for Canada and Mexico, should either of those countries destabilize into a government unfriendly or hostile to the United States.
In the 21st century, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency has lost most of its authority to the Department of Homeland Security although the DTRA is still considered an important office of the Department of Defense.
