Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Inc. (CPE) is the television and film production/distribution unit of Japan-based media conglomerate Sony Pictures. History

In 1989, Columbia acquired the American film and television production company Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Inc. Columbia has since created numerous other film production and distribution units, such as creating Columbia Pictures Classics for art-house fare, and expanded its growth on April 8, 2005, when a consortium led by Columbia and its equity partners acquired the legendary Hollywood studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Inc. in a deal worth nearly $5 billion.<ref name="CNN">Sony will purchase MGM in a deal worth about $5 billion (http://money.cnn.com/2004/09/13/news/fortune500/twx_mgm/?cnn=yes), CNN, September 14 2004.</ref>
