Climbing galaxias
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
'Climbing galaxias', otherwise known as Koaro by the Maoris in New Zealand, is a member of the fish genus galaxiid. In most respects it behaves like the Inanga, a closely related galaxiid species but the distinguishing feature of the Climbing galaxias is its ability to climb up very steep surfaces such as waterfalls and the sluices of hydro dams.
Even the juvenile of the species, otherwise known as whitebait, are capable of climbing up and over the sides of pails after being trapped in whitebait nets.
The Climbing galaxias has special features to enable its special climbing abilities such as the downward orientation of its fins and the strong, backward-facing ridges on the front part of the fins possibly contribute to this ability.
