Chlorobenzene is a toxic aromatic compound, with the chemical formula C6H5Cl. It is a colourless, flammable liquid, and was first made in 1851 by reacting phenol and phosphorus pentachloride.
It is used in organic synthesis; it was important in the manufacture of pesticides, most notably DDT by reacting with trichloroethanol, and it was used in the production of phenol. It is also used as a solvent. During World War I, it was used by the Central Powers from 1917.
