Champawat

Champawat is one of the 6 districts of Kumaon. Champwat is believed to the place where the Turtle incarnation of Lord Vishnu - The Kurmavtar took place.
Champwat has a glorious historical past. Once been the capital of Chand Rulers, Champawat is also famous for its splendid scenic beauty. The Baleshwar Temple built by the Chand Rulers in Sixteenth century is an excellent monument with marvelous stone carving works.
Many famous families of Kumaon have origin in Champawat ,like the Joshi's of Jhinjhar,Salakola and Latoli.
