Central Freeway

The Central Freeway is a freeway that was part of US Highway 101 in San Francisco (US 101 was resigned to use side streets around 2000). It was originally intended to run north to Lombard Street (west of the crooked section of the street) and connect to a freeway running from there to the Golden Gate Bridge, but construction was halted after the Freeway Revolt in the 1950s and the freeway never extended north past Turk Street. After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the section between Turk Street and Fell Street was closed and later demolished. In 2003, the section between Mission Street and Fell Street was demolished. As of 2005, the freeway is being rebuilt past Mission Street to end at Market Street. A boulevard is being built north from Market Street to Hayes Street along Octavia Street to reconnect the freeway with Fell and Oak Streets. These two projects are expected to be completed in mid-2005.
