Digimon (
Japanese: デジモン,
romaji dejimon) was originally a dueling digital pet ("digi pet") created by
Bandai, on June 26, 1997, although it was clear that Digimon had been in planning since the beginning of that year. "Digimon" are "Digital Monsters". According to the stories, they are creatures who inhabit the "Digital World", a parallel universe that is in part a manifestation of Earth's communication network.
