Placencia, Stann Creek District, Belize People in Placencia - Ketchi Indian, Mayans, Creoles, Garifuna, locals and tourists alike - all get the same personality after spending a few days in Placencia: Totally Laid Back. Although developing rapidly now that F F Coppola has raised the bar with his wonderfully luxurious Blancaneaux Turtle Inn, Placencia still retains its charm. Guest accommodations here run the whole gamut of prices and services offered.

The restaurant selection in the village is also growing. From local to specialty, its not hard to find something to suit everyone, even genuine Italian Ice Cream!Don't bother to bring much else besides bathing gear, shorts and tank tops. Except for the few cool nights during the winter season when 'Northers' blow in, nobody wears any more than they have to here, hence the new Placencia Tourism Board slogan: "Barefoot Perfect".

Tours can be arranged by your hotel or by visits to the wide variety of local dive shops and tour operators at the dock and on The Sidewalk - Placencia's 'main street'.

Its not necessary to change money while in Belize. Everyone loves the American Dollar, still worth $2 Belize.

Leave your car at home and enjoy walking. In Placencia, most everything is in walking distance, and the hotels mostly offer shuttle service. Taxi drivers are very helpful, and cost as little as BZ$5 per person, depending on your journey.

New to the village are bike carts, but single bike are either supplied or rented depending on where you stay. If you are planning a trip to the cayes to snorkel or dive, you will find willing captains just hanging at the dock, or chartered through the dive shops or tour operators, and through your hotels as well.

There are two large Catamaran operators: The Moorings, and TNN. These companies rent their luxury catamarans on a weekly basis. Other sailing charters can be found as well, on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, both catamarans and traditional sailboats, with or without captains and crew. And the larger hotels also offer kayaks for great trips in the Placencia Lagoon, manatee-hunting.

The bus service in Placencia also can get you to Dangriga and beyond, but the buses are mostly school-bus style. To avoid the awful Placencia 'road' (an unpaved teeth-rattling 26 mile adventure), take the 10-minute ride on 'Hokey-Pokey' boat taxi from MnM Fuel dock or the Placencia main dock to Mango Creek where the bus picks you up to go north to Dangriga or south to Punta Gorda - paved road all the way.

Also available once a week is the 'Gulf Cruza' boat from Placencia to Puerto Cortes, Honduras. They leave Placencia Friday and return to Placencia Monday, weather permiting.
