Bud Poile

Norman R. "Bud" Poile (February 10 1924January 4, 2005) was a professional hockey player, coach, general manager, and league executive.

Poile was born in Fort William, Ontario in 1924. He began his career in 1942 as an 18 year old right wing for the Toronto Maple Leafs. His playing career would include stops in Boston, Chicago, and New York. He finished playing with the WHL's Edmonton Flyers in 1955.

After his career, Poile entered hockey administration. He was the general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers when they were building a club that would win the Stanley Cup in both 1974 and 1975. He was also responsible for building the Vancouver Canucks who would play in the 1982 Cup Finals.

In 1984, Poile began a five year stint as commissioner of the International Hockey League, a league one step below the NHL. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder in 1990 after a hockey career that spanned six decades.

Poile's son, David Poile, has also had a long career in the National Hockey League and is the first general manager of the Nashville Predators.

Norman R. "Bud" Poile died in Vancouver on January 4, 2005 after a protracted struggle with Parkinson's disease.
