Bell X-22

The Bell X-22 was an experimental VTOL/STOL aircraft evalutated by the US Navy. It was an unusual tiltrotor design in which lift and thrust were provided by ducted fans driven by four turboshaft engines via a series of gearboxes. Two aircraft were built, the first flying on March 17 1966. One was destroyed in a crash and parts of it were incorporated into the second machine, which flew until 1988.
