Balto (movie)
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
Balto is an animated film produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblimation animation studio, distributed by Universal Pictures, and originally released in movie theatres by 1995. It had two made-for-video sequels: Balto II: Wolf Quest (2002), and Balto III: Wings of Change (2005).
This film was based on a true story. It is a fictionalization of the historic Balto, who was the lead sled dog during the final leg of the 1925 serum run to Nome (or "Great Race of Mercy"), which relayed diphtheria antitoxin by dog sled across the U.S. territory of Alaska.
In this story, Balto is a wolf hybrid (part dog, part wolf) and is considered an outcast by the local community. Aided by his friends, he has to prove himself, when he has to help a dog-sled team retrieve serum to stop an epidemic that has struck the town.
