• In anatomy, the back usually refers to the posterior side of the torso in humans and other primates. It is supported by the spine.

• Back can also refer to the direction of travel exactly opposite the current movement.

• Back in slang can mean to support, as in Backing the home team.

• In many sports, a back is a player whose normal position is behind the forwards. In Rugby union, this means a player who is not involved in the scrum. At Soccer and Hockey and many other games it means a player who is defending the goal. It is often qualified with additional "measures", left back, quarterback, half back, full back, running back, and so on.

• At Cambridge, in England, The Backs (in the plural and with a capital letter) means the area behind the main colleges, alongside the River Cam.
