Atomic coherence

When coherent electromagnetic fields interact with multi-level atomic systems, coherence between levels may be induced. This state is called atomic coherence.

This atomic coherence is essential in research on several effects, such as electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT), lasing without inversion (LWI), enhanced dispersion without absorption, and nonlinear optical interaction with enhanced efficiency.
