Andrew Smith (zoologist)

Dr. Sir Andrew Smith (1797 - 1872) was a Scottish surgeon and zoologist.

Smith began his professional life as a ship's surgeon. He was stationed at the Cape Colony from 1820 to 1837, during which time he led a scientific expedition into the interior. He wrote Illustrations of the Zoology of South Africa (1838-50).

During the Crimean War Smith was Director-General of the British Medical Services.
