Anakin Skywalker is believed by many, notably Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, to be the prophesied Chosen One, destined to bring balance to the Force by destroying the Sith, according to Jedi Master Mace Windu in The Phantom Menace. He is taken as a young boy and trained as a Jedi, and becomes a legendary figure during the Clone Wars.
Anakin is Luke Skywalker's father, and is first mentioned in A New Hope, when Obi-Wan tells Luke that Darth Vader betrayed and murdered Anakin.
In The Empire Strikes Back, the disturbing truth is revealed: having fallen to the dark side of the Force, Anakin Skywalker actually is Darth Vader.
Since Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker are the same character, they are covered in the same article. Due to Biocrawler policy, the most well-known and commonly used name for the character, "Darth Vader", is the title of that article. This short article exists because a redirect would have revealed, without warning, Anakin Skywalker's true identity.
