Amelia is a female given name. It is derived from the Germanic word amal meaning "work". The diminutive is usually Amy.

Etymologists believe that the name Amelia is unrelated to the Latin gens name Aemilia, which was translated into English as Emily. Equivalents of Aemilia/Emily in romance languages do sound similar to Amelia (e.g. Italian Emilia) but should not be confused with this Germanic name.

Famous people named Amelia include Amelia Earhart and Amelia Bloomer.

The Joni Mitchell song Amelia was inspired by aviator Amelia Earhart.

Amelia is a character in one of Fielding's novels, distinguished for her conjugal affection.
