Aglianico

From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.

Aglianico is a red wine grape grown in the Campania and Basilicata regions of Italy.

The grape is believed to have originated in Greece, introduced to Italy by the Phoenicians. The name is in fact a corruption of 'Ellenico' the Italian word for 'Greek'.

The most highly-rated use of the grape is in the region around Mount Vulture, and gives its name to Basilicata's only DOC wine, Aglianico del Vulture.

The grape has also recently been planted in Australia, as it thrives in a predominantly sunny climate.
