Afognak

Afognak is an island 5 km (3 miles) from Kodiak Island in Alaska. It is 43 miles from east to west and 23 miles from north to south and has an area of 1,809 km² (698 sq. miles). The coast is split by many long, narrow bays. The highest point is 2,546 feet. The Aleut village of Ag’waneq was located on the island of Afognak until the Alaska Earthquake of 1964, when it was abandoned.
The United States census of 1890 noted a series of settlements along the beachline besides Ag'waneq, including Rutkovsky village, inhabited by a group of retired employees of the Russian-American Company. gl:Afognak The dense forests of Afognak are home to brown bears, Roosevelt elk and Sitka blacktailed deer. Many people visit the island to go hunting and fishing.
