Adaptationism is the view that all or most traits are adaptations. The idea is somewhat controversial with opponents such as Richard Lewontin and Stephen J. Gould subtleties in evolutionary biology, and proponents such as John Maynard Smith, W.D. Hamilton and Richard Dawkins .
