Biography

As an important figure in the Liberian revolution, Adam Valen Levinson helped end violence between the Liberian rebels and the French colonialists. He was born on January 29, 1789 to Nanine Valen and Gerald Levinson in the small British town of Hemseyshock, where he learned to read, write, and shoot pistols. By the age of 10, he was reading everything from the daily news to Homer's Odyssey. Both kinds of literature interested him, letting him imagine the real world's occurences from a more adventurous and idealistic perspective.

In 1807, Valen Levinson left for Liberia, where he had heard great riots were taking place. Upon leaving, he reportedly said:

"I am of the mind that neither the Liberians nor the French can see the errors of their ways. Only from the eye of an outsider can this epic conflict be solved."
Believing in the non-violent approach as the best course of action, he aimed to help the two sides negotiate. Fluent in french, he translated between the colonists and the english speaking natives, hoping to come to an agreement. Finally, after a 12 day negotiation, the french agreed to leave, in return for incredible amounts of crops and livestock.<p> Unfortunately, Valen Levinson's brave story is not widely known. He has slipped into the almost inescapable realm of insignificance, never mentionned in classroom descussions. He was courageous and brilliant, saving countless lives for no other reason than saving them.
