Abd al-Qadir al-Husayni

Abd al-Qadir al-Husayni (1907-1948) was a Palestinian nationalist and fighter who commanded the Arab Liberation Army in the war of 1948. He was born to the influential al-Husayni family in Jerusalem, son of Musa Qassem al-Husseini; his relatives included Amin al-Husayni. He graduated in chemistry at the American University in Cairo, and organized the Congress of Educated Muslims. In 1931, he founded the Al-Jihad al-Muqaddas armed group, and led the Palestinians in the Great Arab Revolt of 1936-9; he was exiled in 1938, but secretly returned to lead a Palestinian army in January 1948, and was killed in battle at al-Qastal, a village east of Jerusalem, on April 8, 1948. Faisal Husseini was his son.
