AVPU system

Sometimes an ill or injured person is disoriented or incoherent, which may mask serious medical conditions or injuries. Patients' mental coherence will fall into one of four categories (the AVPU system)
- A = alert: responds coherently to questions
- V = responds to verbal stimuli inappropriately
- P = responds to painful stimuli only (such as rubbing the sternum)
- U = unresponsive to any stimuli
