- January - The Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railroad's mainline (485 miles of track) is now completely under CTC.
- January - Louisville and Nashville Railroad begins the merger process with the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railroad.
- January 23 - Sutton Coldfield train disaster, England: A passenger train rounds a sharp curve too fast and derails; 17 people die as a result.

- April 24 - Canadian National Railway inaugurates the Super Continental passenger train between Toronto, Ontario, and Vancouver, British Columbia.
- April 24 - Canadian Pacific Railway inaugurates The Canadian passenger train between Montreal, Quebec, and Vancouver, British Columbia.

- May - The Pennsylvania Railroad introduces the first all-piggyback train service with its "Truc-Train".
- May 29 - The Norfolk and Western begins its conversion to diesel locomotive power from a purely steam locomotive roster with the purchase of eight ALCO RS-3s.

- August 22 - Spring City Train Disaster, Spring City, Tennessee, United States: School bus disregards crossing signal and is struck by freight train. 11 dead, 39 hurt, all the dead are school children.

- Norris Roy Crump succeeds George Walker as president of Canadian Pacific Railway.
- The Great Northern Railway ceases operations of its electric locomotives through the Rocky Mountains; trains are now powered solely by diesel locomotives.
