$1.98 Beauty Show
From Biocrawler, the free encyclopedia.
$1.98 Beauty Show was an American syndicated television show which was a parody of beauty contests. Rip Taylor hosts as 6 female contestants (and once, a male dressed in drag) competed for the title of "$1.98 Beauty Queen".
There were three celebrity judges, but they didn't make the decisions. The producers did that.
The syndicated show ran 30 minutes and consisted of three rounds. The first round introduced the contestants one at a time. The second round would feature their "talent". The third round was the swimsuit competition. When that was over, Rip announced the $1.98 Beauty of the Week (sometimes the ugliest). She would get a tacky plastic crown, rotten vegetables as a bouquet and, more importantly, the princely sum of $ 1.98.
The show first aired in September 1978, and the last episode was aired in September of 1980, when it was cancelled. Johnny Jacobs was the announcer, Rip Taylor the host, and Chuck Barris was the creator and Executive Producer.
